GEORGE W. LEWIS

TARBORO — George W. Lewis, 87, passed away Friday, August 3, 2012.

George was born in Farmville, N.C. on Feb. 22, 1925 to the late Alfonzo and Annie Dean Lewis. Upon his parents’ death, he was reared at Barium Springs Orphanage in Statesville, N.C. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1941-1943 and was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and returned to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on the G.I. Bill.

Graduating in 1949 with a degree in Commerce, he went to work for The Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Company (CT&T). At the end of the 1960’s CT&T was purchased by a telecommunications holding company that eventually became the Sprint Corporation in Overland Park, Kansas, where George was Vice-President of Finance until he retired in 1984.

George was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tarboro, was an active member of Hilma Country Club, and served as President of the Optimist Club in Tarboro. The fact that he was an avid golfer and life-long Carolina Tarheel athletic enthusiast is simply an understatement; those activities were his passion. He was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather (PaPa), ever the gentleman with a sense of humor and loved by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Margie Daughtridge Lewis, brothers; Bill Lewis, Charles Lewis, Thomas Lewis, Ben Lewis, Ray Lewis, and sisters May Odom and Annie Daniel Register. He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda Lewis Casper of Rocky Mount; grandson, Craven Randall Casper of Washington, D.C., granddaughters Kristen Marie Casper and Michelle Lynn Casper, both of Raleigh; sister Blanche Lewis Robinson of Rocky Mount and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 4, 2012, at Carlisle Funeral Home in Tarboro. The family received friends following the service at Carlisle Funeral Home. A private burial followed at Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Hospice of Nash General, 2460 Curtis Ellis Drive, Rocky Mount, NC, 27804, Barium Springs Orphanage, P.O. Box 1, Barium Springs, NC 28010; or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73123.

The family would like to thank Nash General Hospice and the staff at the Fountain of the Albemarle for the care he received.

Arrangements were by Carlisle Funeral Home of Tarboro.

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR

    To the Editor:
It breaks my heart to look at the puppies and kittens at the Tarboro Animal Shelter pictured in Monday’s editions of the Daily Southerner.  June is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Month, and I pray these fur babies will find a good forever home.  Bucking a statewide and national trend, the kittens have a better chance of getting adopted than the puppies.  Why?
