MELBA V. POMANTE

TARBORO — On August 22, 1924, God put a shining star in the sky for all to enjoy. This Southern lady, Melba Verona Grimmer, was born in Edgecombe County to William Grimmer and Mamie Coburn Grimmer. Melba was the sister of Mary Catherine Wilson, Lucy G. Liles, William Dennis Grimmer, McElroy “Mack” Grimmer, Faye Muchow, Cecil Grimmer and Louise G. McDuffie, who predeceased her.

Melba grew up in Conetoe, Speed and Tarboro. Her first job was with Carolina Telephone & Telegraph in Camp Davis during World War II. There, she met her future husband, Vincent James Pomante, from Ohio. They married in 1944 and settled in Columbus, Ohio, where they lived and raised two children, Anna P. Bean and Vincent James Pomante Jr.  She lived there for 24 years and returned to Tarboro to be near family. In 1967, she began managing Hilma Country Club, where she met and made many friends that she grew to love.

An elegant Southern lady, Melba was often called the “Martha Stewart” of Tarboro. While living in Ohio she learned the art of Italian cooking from her mother-in-law. She shared this talent with her family and friends. Melba welcomed everyone into her home and shared anything she had. She helped her friends who were shut-ins by taking food and other things she thought they might need. She became known in the community as a great cook, a talented seamstress and friend to all for over 50 years.

Melba leaves behind her two children, Ann Bean and husband, Bill, of Kilgore Texas, and Vincent Pomante Jr. of Rocky Mount. She also has a granddaughter, Amy Pomante of New York, as well as several nieces and nephews. Her only grandson, V.J. Pomante, was killed in Iraq in December 2006. Friends are invited to Carlisle Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, to share memories of this Southern Treasure and bid her a fond farewell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by Carlisle Funeral Home, Tarboro.
