Mildred Miffleton Harper, age 89, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2012, at the Fountains at the Albemarle in Tarboro. Graveside service will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Ebenezer Rd, Tarboro, at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012.
Born December 28, 1922, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Walter Beadles and Ida Payne Miffleton, she was the second of four children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Joseph John (Joe) Harper, Sr.; granddaughter, Laura Christie Harper; brother, W. B. Miffleton, Jr.; sister, Dorothy M. Hall; and dear friends Esther Thorne and Becky Gammon.
Mildred is survived by sons, District Court Judge Joseph John Harper, Jr. and wife Anne of Tarboro; Stephen Walter Harper and wife Elizabeth of the Leggett Community; daughter Susan H. Britt and husband Bob of Rocky Mount; and sister Nancy M. Barber of Yorktown, Va. She leaves 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews to cherish her memory. She is also survived by many friends at the Albemarle including her dear and dedicated friends Evelyn Britt and Carlyle Gay. Mildred will be remembered for her friendly smile, kind heart and giving spirit.
Mildred lived in the Leggett Community for over 50 years until her move to the Albemarle five years ago. She was an active and devoted member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in the Leggett Community. She taught children’s Sunday School and sang in the church choir.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff of the Albemarle for their compassionate and gentle care of Mother and loving support of the family. Community Home Care & Hospice, and her sitters, Betty Rogister and Mary Ann Webb cheered and cared for Mother and gave great encouragement to the family.
If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery Fund in care of Robert Ruffin, 862 O'Neal Rd, Whitakers, NC 27891.
Visitation will be held at Carlisle Funeral Home, 701 Hospital Drive, Tarboro, NC from 6:30 to 8:00 pm Friday, July 27, 2012.
