TARBORO — COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia-Hugh Edward (Ed) Brazil died peacefully on July 3, 2012, in Columbia, South Carolina. Born February 1, 1942, in Tarboro, NC, he was the son of Fitzhugh Spencer and Lila Sykes Brazil. He was a 1960 graduate of Tarboro High School.

He received an ROTC scholarship to the University of Mississippi and graduated with a degree in political science in 1964. On graduation day he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy.

He served aboard the U.S.S. Essex stationed at Quonset Point, RI, until 1966. In that year he was chosen to be the Aide to the Commandant of the 9th Naval District. His last tour of duty was as a lieutenant in Vietnam in 1968 - 1969. On his return, he resigned from the Navy and began graduate school. He earned his Master’s degree from Ole Miss in 1971 and his PhD from the University of Georgia in 1980. He taught Political Science at Spelman College for four years and at Winthrop College for two years and then at Eastern Illinois University for 24 years.

On his retirement in 2006 he settled in Chester County, SC. He was involved in the American Legion, Toastmasters International, Sons of the Confederacy, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ed was pre-deceased by his parents, his step-parents, his half brother and his half sister.

To cherish his memory he leaves his son, Hugh Edward (Ted) Brazil Jr., his daughter-in-law, Angela, and his grandchildren: Grayson, Evan, Josh, Ashlee, and Amanda.

It breaks my heart to look at the puppies and kittens at the Tarboro Animal Shelter pictured in Monday’s editions of the Daily Southerner. June is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Month, and I pray these fur babies will find a good forever home. Bucking a statewide and national trend, the kittens have a better chance of getting adopted than the puppies. Why?
