TARBORO —
Samuel Richard Pollard, 90, died Mon. Dec. 3, 2012, at his home in Tarboro. Sam was born in Edgecombe County on Nov. 28, 1922 to the late Orlander R and Mary Felton Pollard. Also preceding him in death were his sister Mary Vick and his brothers O.R., Joseph, Thomas, Lynwood and Lester Pollard. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Price Pollard, daughter Sandra Pollard, daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and Rick Lowder, granddaughters Mariah and Gabrielle Lowder, and sisters Frances Alexander and husband Bill and Betty Ann Poindexter and husband EJ .
After graduating as valedictorian at Speed High School, Sam served in the US Army during World War II. He later graduated from East Carolina and worked for the Right-of –Way branch of the N.C. Department of Transportation in Shelby, Albemarle, and Greenville before retiring as Area-Negotiator at age 72.
Among his community activities, Sam took special pleasure in serving in many capacities, including Master Mason and Lecturer, in the Loyal Order of Masons. In December of 2011, NC Grand Master Bob Gresham recognized Sam’s years of dedication and service by honoring him as a recipient of the Montfort medal for “distinguished Masonic service and accomplishment.”
Most of all, Sam was a God-loving man who served for many years as Sunday School teacher and Deacon, and more recently as Deacon Emeritus, in the First Baptist churches of Albemarle and Tarboro. His love of his church community was only surpassed by his love and dedication to his family, his greatest source of pride and joy.
Services will be held at First Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 with burial immediately following at Edgecombe Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the home on 2605 Beechwood Drive, Tarboro. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of your choice, First Baptist Church, Tarboro, or Masonic Home for Children at Oxford.
Arrangements are by Carlisle Funeral Home, Inc., Tarboro. Online condolences may be directed to the family by visiting HYPERLINK "http://www.carlislefuneralhome.com" www.carlislefuneralhome.com
