MAX W. TURNER

TARBORO — KINSTON — Max William "Higher" Turner Jr. 63, retired truck driver of Kinston, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2012 at Vidant Hospice in Greenville after a valiant battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife Emily Stallings Turner of the home; his mother Minnie Eakes Harris of Kinston; three daughters, Constancia R.M. Gardner of Shrewsberry, Ma, Cher Tranbarger Pridgen of Bailey, Kelly Varnell Grady of La Grange; three sons, Pablo Rios-Maldanado of Wilson, Mario Rio-Maldanado of Greenville, Bryon Varnell of Rocky Mount; three sisters, Nancy Hill of Kinston, Peggy Stancil of Grifton, Mary Elizabeth Jones of Trenton; one brother, Rober Lee Harris Jr. of Deep Run; five grandchildren, Abby, Cody, Hannah, Maegan and Summer Paige who were the lights of his life. He is preceded in death by his father and first wife Betty Stanley Turner.

He was a loving husband, son, brother and "Papa" who was loved by all and will be missed by many especially his feline companions, "Alvin & "Theodore" who comforted him in his final days. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the Howard Carter Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Horne officiating. Followed by the burial in the Snow Hill City Cemetery. Visitation will be form 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2012. The family will receive friends at other times at the home of Donnie and Peggy Stancil of 4730 Braxton Road in Grifton.

    It breaks my heart to look at the puppies and kittens at the Tarboro Animal Shelter pictured in Monday’s editions of the Daily Southerner.  June is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Month, and I pray these fur babies will find a good forever home.  Bucking a statewide and national trend, the kittens have a better chance of getting adopted than the puppies.  Why?
