TARBORO — Leroy Howard, 86, of 504 E. Church St., Tarboro, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012 at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital. He was born in Edgecombe County and was the son of the late Cora Howard Baker and the late Henry Wilkins.

He was the husband for 51 years to Bernice Joyner Howard, who passed away in September 2001. A 1944 graduate of W.A. Pattillo High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947, primarily in the Philippines. A graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, he taught in Kinston and Bethel before becoming assistant principal at North Edgecombe High School. His last position was assistant superintendent of Edgecombe County Public Schools and he retired in 1993.

Mr. Howard was a long-time member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and served as warden for several years. Also he was a member of the Elks, the Masons, Omega Psi Phi fraternity and was an original Sportsman Club member.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012 at St. Luke Episcopal Church with the Rev. Janey Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Tarboro.

Mr. Howard is survived by his daughter Carolyn Cassandra Howard Parker; his son Stevenson Leroy Howard; his daughter in-law, Lynette Plemmer Howard; five grandchildren, LeDenrick Braswell, Tabitha Lynn Jones, Stefanie Nicole Howard, Sevenson Leroy Howard II and Sean-Michael Howard; and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services are being handled by Hemby-Willoughby Mortuary of Tarboro.

Mrs. Bullock, a native of Wilson County and a lifelong resident of Pitt County, was a graduate of Belvoir-Falkland High School. She was engaged in farming with her husband until 1989 and was a charter member of Belvoir Free Will Baptist Church.
