Council's retreat cost more than $5,000

Second retreat in three years

TARBORO — Tarboro Town Council’s recent retreat in New Bern cost the town $5,192.

Most of the expense was for overnight lodging Feb. 25-27 at the Hilton Riverfront.

Seven of the nine elected representatives (Mayor Donald Morris and Council members Jim Alford, Al Hull, Taro Knight, Rick Page and Gerrelene Walker), three staff members (Finance Officer Janet Lewis, Town Manager Sam Noble and Planner Troy Lewis) stayed Friday and Saturday nights.

Councilwoman Candis Owens arrived Saturday morning and stayed that night.

Two people from the UNC School of Government also stayed overnight. Lydian Altman, who facilitated the meeting and is preparing a report, stayed Friday and Saturday nights. Bill Rivenbark, professor of public administration and government, stayed one night.

The lodging total was $2,352.

The next largest expense was meals, which totaled $1,448.

There were no alcohol charges, according to receipts.

The meeting room cost $1,050 for a day and a half.

Most of the Council members rode with the town manager in a town-owned van, but Owens, Page, Knight and Troy Lewis were reimbursed $341 total for mileage in their private vehicles.

This was Council’s second retreat in three years.

The elected body met from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and even ate lunch together in a room next to the meeting room. The Sunday session was from 8 until about noon.

Councilmen Dr. Steve Hoard and Melvin Muhammad did not attend.
