Arts Council’s art exhibit under way

TARBORO — The Edgecombe Cultural Arts Council’s summer invitational art exhibit will started Thursday and continue  through  Aug. 24 in the Hobson Pittman Memorial Gallery at the Blount-Bridgers House.

The exhibit will feature watercolorist Linda Dallas and fiber artist Pamela Zimmerman.  A reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 12.

Dallas, who now reside in Raleigh, was born and raised in Detroit, She moved to Washington D.C. in 1974 and studied mathematics at Howard University.

While residing in Washington she began to pursue a love of art through adult education courses and workshops. She was accepted into a graduate program of the College of Design at North Carolina State University, which brought her to Raleigh in 1986.

While pursuing her graduate degree, she taught drawing and worked as an assistant manager of Noah’s, a natural food co-op.  She spent hours arranging produce and this experience cultivated a greater appreciation of whole foods with their rich colors and textures. With her love of math, she began identifying the curl of lettuce leaves, the delicate geometry of broccoli, and so many patterns that we sometimes take for granted.  This became her inspiration and can clearly be seen in her beautiful watercolor paintings.

Working with watercolors can be challenging and meticulous, but the natural patterns found in nature are an inspiration to her and shows in her paintings.

Much like Dallas, Pamela Zimmerman was also influenced by her interests. Zimmerman was previously a national park ranger, so she had lived and worked close to nature and had always been fascinated with native basketry. After being given a book on pine needle baskets, she began to teach herself how to create them.  She was always intrigued with creating “something from nothing”.  In late 1998, she began weaving baskets from nature and was hooked.  It wasn’t long before she was creating miniature baskets and later developing her own techniques incorporating horsehair, one of the most challenging coiling mediums in basketry.

Zimmerman said, “It is a continual learning experience, one that brings me great joy.”  As of 2011, she had completed over 1,000 woven pieces and won over 200 art and exhibit awards.  A number of pieces in the exhibit feature figurative elements interwoven with various mediums.  Faces appear to emerge from nature’s tapestry and, though many of her works are small in scale, you can see the attention taken with each individual piece.
