TARBORO — Ringing bells and school buses marked the first day of school for students in Edgecombe County.

Following open house at many of the schools Monday, the principals and staff available as students and parents flooded the halls only gave warm smiles and hugs instead of instruction and directions.

"It's been very good," said W.A. Pattillo A+ Principal Sylvia Cobb. "A lot of our parents and students came out to open house, that was very successful, and we had some come in yesterday, so the children know where to go.

"It's been a very successful open," Cobb added.

Cobb, top right, did help a few students make sure they were going in the right direction.

Many of the parents came with cameras in one hand and the hand of their child in the other.

Princeville Montessori Principal Amy Marshall-Brown, bottom right, stood at the front doors to make sure her parents and students knew where to go.

Marshall-Brown greeted new and returning students as well as new and returning parents.

The offices of both schools had parents and students needing to work out a few kinks before the start of the day.

Students return to the Edgecombe County Public Schools with a new superintendent, Dr. Wayne Talley who has placed an emphasis on working with programs that are already in place throughout the county to help students achieve.

The first three-day weekend students can expect is Sept. 6 for Labor Day.
