Suspected stolen auto found in river

ROCKY MOUNT — The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an SUV that was discovered in the Tar River on N.C. 97 near Leggett Road.

Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight said a motorist reported seeing the dark blue Land Rover’s back end sticking out of the river around 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

The incident was first treated as an accident, therefore the N.C. State Patrol was called for the initial investigation.

Further investigation concluded that the windows were broken out of the vehicle and the Land Rover was pushed in the water.

“It looks like someone drove up to the bank, knocked out all the windows and pushed it in the river so it would sink,” Knight said. “The water was not high enough. It had about eight inches sticking out from the top.”

During the initial investigation Knight said investigators were able to see inside the vehicle, removing speculation that someone was inside it.

After the vehicle was pulled from the river, the sheriff’s department took over the investigation.

There was no license plate on the vehicle. A check of the VIN indicated the vehicle was stolen in Virginia in 2007. It had an obscenity scratched into the hood.

Anyone with information about the stolen Land Rover is urged to call the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office at 641-7911.

    John Farrelly, Superintendent of Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS), announced this week that Shawna Andrews has been named the Director of Middle Schools and Title I in the Educational Program Services Office at Central Services.
    Andrews, who most recently served as the Director of Elementary Schools and Title I, began her tenure with ECPS in 1995 as a math and science teacher at C.B. Martin Middle School. Following her completion of a Master’s in School Administration, she served as an administrative intern at G.W. Bulluck Elementary, SouthWest Edgecombe High School and Tarboro High School before being named an assistant principal at Tarboro High School in 2003.

  • Big ‘Happening’ set for Tarboro Saturday

    At no time of the year is Tarboro’s Town Common more bustling with activity than the second Saturday in May. It’s that time of year again and the 43rd Annual Happening on the Common is set for 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday.
