Two help Locks of Love in separate gifts

TARBORO — A local elementary school student and a graphic designer at The Daily Southerner recently donated hair to Locks of Love.

Renee Owens, a hairdresser at Sunshine Hair Designs in Tarboro, cut 12 inches of 8-year-old Abigail Hardy’s hair on Wednesday.  Owens divided Abigail’s sun-streaked blonde hair into pigtails and then cut off the pigtails.

“This is just something she’s wanted to do for a long time,” said Angela Hardy, Abigail’s mother.  “She’s already talking about doing it again.” She said Abigail, a student at Faith Christian School in Rocky Mount, has had regular trims since she was a baby but has always worn her hair long.

Owens said Abigail had been coming into the salon every couple of months to get her hair measured and when her hair was finally long enough to be donated, she was ready for the haircut.

“She was so excited,” said Owens. She said Sunshine Hair Designs has been cutting hair for Locks of Love since the salon opened eight years ago. Locks of Love is an organization that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair.

For JoEllen Pollard, graphic designer at The Daily Southerner, donating hair to Locks of Love was about making a long-awaited change.

“I hadn’t done anything this drastic since the 6th grade,” she said. Patricia Keel, hairdresser at Macclesfield Beauty Shop, used a newspaper measuring exactly 10 and 1/8 inches wide to determine how much to cut Pollard’s hair. (Locks of Love requires a donation of at least 10 inches.) For Pollard, having shorter hair has been an adjustment, but she has received positive reactions to her haircut and feels good about making the donation.

“My hair was my security blanket. I felt like if I donated it, I could make someone else feel better,” said Pollard.

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

It is Locks of Love’s mission to promote the well-being of children through its program of providing hairpieces. All events and fundraisers held on behalf of Locks of Love should uphold and reflect the mission and desire to help disadvantaged children.
