Butterfield to Princeville: Probe belongs to state

TARBORO — PRINCEVILLE — A resolution passed during the Town of Princeville's Aug. 27 board of commissioners meeting didn't quite get the backing of a United State Congressman that the three council members had hoped.

The resolution asked U.S. Rep. G. K. Butterfield to investigate the "misappropriation of funds by any and all private individuals, public servants or former public servants or public entities" in connection with recovery funds for Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

The resolution passed by a 3-2 vote with mayor Priscilla Everette-Oates and commissioners Isabelle Purvis-Andrews and Calvin Sherrod voting for the resolution while commissioners Ann Howell and Gwen Knight voted against it.

On several occasions, Everette-Oates made accusations of misappropriation of FEMA funds but never named those responsible. Everette-Oates did say she had discussed the issue with the congressman.

Three days after the meeting, Butterfield wrote Everette-Oates explaining that his office is not responsible for investigating the matter. The letter read, "This issue relates to a state matter and is outside of my jurisdiction as a federal officeholder. As a North Carolina municipality, the town has the authority to submit a request to a law enforcement agency with jurisdiction of the subject matter if there is credible evidence that federal funds were misappropriated by any of the categories of individual that you have delineated."

The resolution also asked Butterfield to look into the possibility that the town's FEMA funds were significantly less than was promised and allocated.

Butterfield advised he was forwarding the resolution to FEMA and asking the agency to conduct a review.

  • Woman faces 32 charges

    A Tarboro woman's scam has led authorities to arrest her on 28 charges.
    According to a Tarboro Police Department report, Jennifer Ann Carr, 29, 1609 Barlow Rd. Apt. 9, took out loans in the names of 16 customers of a local business from January through April. Carr was employed through a temp agency with a local business, said Tarboro Police Sgt. Al Braxton. Braxton said the total loan amount netted $4,300.  
    Carr was charged with 16 counts of identity theft and 16 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. She was place in Edgecombe County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond.

    After executing a search warrant Thursday on a residence at 500 W. Johnston St. in Tarboro, police officers arrested two suspects for possessing a small amount of marijuana and issued a third suspect a citation for possessing a glass pipe to smoke the drugs.
    After the marijuana was found, officers notified two of the three suspects that they also had additional warrants on them from the department's "Spring Fling" drug campaign where they had sold marijuana to undercover officers.

    Twenty-three cases of the measles have been reported in North Carolina in a recent outbreak and has state health officials concerned.
    “It (measles) is a highly contagious disease that is spread in the air by coughing and sneezing,” said Susan Rogerson, nursing director at the Edgecombe County Health Department. Outbreaks of measles in the United States are rare because of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
