Community invited to ‘Walk for Hope’ on Saturday

TARBORO — Breast cancer survivors and their friends, families and supporters throughout the area are invited to attend the first annual Walk for Hope event at 9 a.m. Saturday on the Vidant Edgecombe Hospital walking track. All proceeds from the event will help support the work of the Lotus Survival Foundation.

Edgecombe County is the 16th highest county in the entire country in terms of mortality rates due to breast cancer,” said Claudia Tovar de Aguirre, president and founder of Lotus Survival Foundation. “Lotus Survival Foundation works to provide support, healing retreats and mentoring programs for breast cancer survivors in Edgecombe County and surrounding regions so that those who are suffering may receive the emotional and spiritual support they need to cope with the disease.”

Lotus Survival Foundation, a Raleigh-based nonprofit focused on providing education, resources and support to those who have been affected by breast cancer, is partnering with Vidant to present the Walk for Hope.  Those interested in participating will be asked to gather contributions from sponsors as pledges per lap that they plan to walk.

Tarboro resident and breast cancer survivor, Shirley Hussey has been helping to plan the event.  “I think the Walk for Hope is important for our community because it can help get cancer survivors and their loved ones more involved and help them find support,” Hussey said.  “I am a ‘two-time’ breast cancer survivor and I want people to know how helpful programs like this can be.”

Walk for Hope is the first walk for breast cancer awareness of its kind to be held in Tarboro.  A special day of activities is planned, including assorted vendors and booths, a performance by Irish-Celtic folk band Twisted Knot, a screening of a film about a North Carolina breast cancer survivor and other attractions.

“All cancer survivors, their families, friends and loved ones and anyone interested in increasing cancer awareness and hope for survivors can join us,” said Scott Phillips, one of the event planners and the Patient Navigator at Vidant Oncology Center in Tarboro. “This event will be a lot of fun and will help raise money for a great cause,” Phillips said.

Anyone interested in participating in the walk should call Scott Phillips at 641-8313 to register and to receive pledge forms.
