Two teenagers accused of tossing objects from U.S. 64 overpass
Two teenagers face felony assault charges after Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight said they threw objects onto vehicles from a bridge overlooking U.S. 64.
Joseph Michael Squires, 16, of 209 Alexander Brown Road in Bethel, and an unnamed 14-year-old were each charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, as well as five misdemeanor counts of injury to personal property, after police said a person called about damage to their vehicle on July 22, at around 3:50 a.m.
Knight said the caller's vehicle was damaged at the Roberson School Road overpass on U.S. 64. Deputies did find a bag left at the overpass that contained nuts, bolts, rocks, nails and other metal pieces, Knight said.
Four other victims were found to have damage to their cars, with the damage ranging from flat tires, damaged windshields and dents in their vehicles' hoods, Knight said. All five of the vehicles were traveling west on U.S. 64 when they were damaged, he added.
