TARBORO — The following people were arrested and charged with crimes by the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office over the past week.

July 17

• Edward Tyrone Powell, 57, of 212 Lonepine Trailer Park, Princeville, was charged with two counts of failure to appear in court.

• Charles Lewis Battle, 56, of 401 Otis Ave., Princeville, was charged with failure to appear in court. He was jailed under a $1,000 secured bond.

• Cory Michael Wiggins, 18, of 900 Chestnut St., Tarboro, was charged with assault inflicting serious injury and assault attempt to inflict serious injury. He was jailed under a $5,000 secured bond.

July 18

• Thomas Lee Acrey, 53, of 94 Daisey Lane, Rocky Mount, was charged with failure to appear in court. He was jailed under a $8,000 secured bond.

• Linda Johnson, 39, of 248 Booth Lane, Tarboro was charged with failure to appear in court. She was jailed under a $500 secured bond.

• Heather Michelle Taylor, 22, of 6577 Colonial Road, Macclesfield, was charged with failure to appear in court.

• Jose Santos Zapatero-Perez, 55, of 601 Bunting Lane, Pinetops, was charged with driving while license revoked. He was jailed under a $500 secured bond.

• Barbara Ann Powell, 48, of 3016 NC 122 N, Speed, was charged with child abuse.

• Dana Casper Gardner, 29, of 1804 Old River Road, Greenville, was charged with communicating threats and threatening phone call.

July 19

• Kinta Martial Brown, 33, of 88 Woody Road, Tarboro, was charged with abandon/non-support of child. He was jailed under a $13,214 cash bond.

July 21

• Kheesa Denyce Jones, 40, of 1104 Newsome St., Tarboro, was charged with felony larceny. She was jailed under a $1,000 secured bond.

• Devonte Wilkins, 20, of 34 Laurel Lane, Tarboro, was charged with simple assault. He was jailed with no bond.

• Michael Christopher Cherry, 24, of 500 W. Johnston St., Tarboro, was charged with felony larceny. He was jailed under a $1,000 secured bond.

July 22

• Charlene Anderson, 40, of 1631 Batts Chapel Road, Tarboro, was charged with simple worthless check.

• William Henry Knight, III, 25, of US 301 Carolina Inn Room 9, Rocky Mount, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and injury to personal property. He was jailed under a $1,500 secured bond.

July 23

• Tiffany Veronica Sharpe, 22, of 411 Madison St., Rocky Mount, was charged with possession of a weapon by a prisoner.

• Thresa Bynum, 45, of 313 Ashland Ave., Rocky Mount, was charged with violation of a court order. She was jailed with no bond.

July 24

• Quanedra Braswell, 20, of 3075 NC 64 Alt. E, Tarboro, was charged with failure to appear in court. She was jailed under a $500 secured bond.

Also the following person was charged by the Tarboro Police Department.

• Katrina Denise Wilkins, 36, of 210 Martin Sasser Dr., Tarboro was with embezzlement and larceny by employee. She was jailed under a $50,000 secured bond.

  • Woman faces 32 charges

    A Tarboro woman's scam has led authorities to arrest her on 28 charges.
    According to a Tarboro Police Department report, Jennifer Ann Carr, 29, 1609 Barlow Rd. Apt. 9, took out loans in the names of 16 customers of a local business from January through April. Carr was employed through a temp agency with a local business, said Tarboro Police Sgt. Al Braxton. Braxton said the total loan amount netted $4,300.  
    Carr was charged with 16 counts of identity theft and 16 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. She was place in Edgecombe County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond.

  • CRIME.jpg Two suspects arrested on 36 charges; third issued citation

    After executing a search warrant Thursday on a residence at 500 W. Johnston St. in Tarboro, police officers arrested two suspects for possessing a small amount of marijuana and issued a third suspect a citation for possessing a glass pipe to smoke the drugs.
    After the marijuana was found, officers notified two of the three suspects that they also had additional warrants on them from the department's "Spring Fling" drug campaign where they had sold marijuana to undercover officers.

    Not convinced? Just ask Stephen Herring, instructor of religion, geography, and developmental studies at Edgecombe Community College (ECC). He will teach an Introductory Latin class beginning Tuesday. The class will meet at Fleming 218 on the Tarboro campus.

    Twenty-three cases of the measles have been reported in North Carolina in a recent outbreak and has state health officials concerned.
    “It (measles) is a highly contagious disease that is spread in the air by coughing and sneezing,” said Susan Rogerson, nursing director at the Edgecombe County Health Department. Outbreaks of measles in the United States are rare because of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

    While county commissioners have accepted bids on seven foreclosure properties, a total of 41 others remain available for interested parties to submit bids.
    County Planning Director Brian Hassell said interested parties may submit bids for commissioners to consider. If a bid is approved and another party is interested, they may submit an upset bid.
