FROM STAFF REPORTS
The Tar River Boys stencil is a reminder of what Tarboro residents will never forget, the 1999 flood.
Brent and Sylvia Nash and Dr. Pete and Betty Temple nailed it to the cypress tree next to the Tarboro-Princeville bridge to show how high the Tar River was.
That old tree and others are coming down to make room for a new bridge. One old cypress went down Monday, but the other proved too stubborn and another piece of heavy equipment was due in this morning to finish the job.
The trees are not cut down but rather a big hole is dug around the stump and then heavy equipment is used to knock the tree over. “Makes it a lot easier to get the stump,” said J.E. Lyons of Lyons Excavating out of Whitakers.
The area is being cleared and grubbed this week, said state Department of Transportation resident engineer Steve Joyner, in preparation for the new $7.5 million bridge that is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 15, 2010.
