Joy Dalton-Robinson, a former quality assurance manager at Nomaco in Tarboro, has been sentenced to one year and one month of imprisonment.
The sentence comes after Dalton-Robinson of Rocky Mount was convicted of nine counts of mail fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud following a jury trial earlier this year.
Additionally, restitution of more than $117,000 was imposed.
Dalton-Robinson was a quality assurance manager at Nomaco from 2003 to Dec. 16, 2005.
As a quality assurance manager, one of Dalton-Robinson’s responsibilities was to obtain quotes from companies to provide calibration services for Nomaco.
In Dec. 16, 2005, Nomaco was going to fire her for falsifying work hours, to which she agreed to resign in lieu of being fired.
Shortly after she resigned, David Williams, Nomaco's manager, started looking at the Nomaco's finances for budget purposes and noticed that over $100,000.00 was spent on calibrations for machines, which was a very high amount.
After more thorough review, it was revealed that while Dalton-Robinson was employed with Nomaco, she and others created three fraudulent companies: CHDacton, Jvaden and Synclair-Harris.
These companies were created to provide “calibration services” at Nomaco. Invoices from the three companies in the amount of approximately $117,000 were submitted and paid over a year period.
Nomaco, however, has no records that these calibrations services were actually conducted.
The investigation revealed that CHDacton was registered to Dalton-Robinson’s father on Aug. 1, 2005; however, the first invoice submitted to Nomaco was dated July 1, 2005.
From July 15, 2005, to Dec. 9, 2005, CHDacton submitted 15 invoices listing calibration services totaling $42,080.00. Nomaco issued the checks to CHDacton. The checks were deposited into a checking account held in the name of Dalton-Robinson and her father. The Synclair-Harris company was registered to Dalton-Robinson’s fiancé at the time, now husband, on Oct. 3, 2005; however, the first check paid by Nomaco to the company was dated April 29, 2005. From April 29, 2005, to Dec. 21, 2005, approximately 19 checks were made payable and issued to SynclairHarris totaling $42,160 for calibration services that were never conducted.
The investigation further revealed that Jvaden was actually Jo Vaden, a childhood friend of Dalton-Robinson.
From Aug. 27, 2004, to July 18, 2005, approximately 14 checks were made payable and mailed to Jvaden totaling $33,448 for calibration services that were determined had not been performed.
United States Attorney George E.B. Holding applauded the sentence imposed by the Court: “the Court’s sentence strongly addresses the crime in this case. The defendant simply stole from her employer. Placed in a position of trust, this defendant went to great lengths to set up a scheme to abuse that trust and stole more than $100,000 of her employer’s funds.”
Investigation of the case was conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service. Assistant United States Attorney Felice McConnell Corpening served as prosecutor for the government.

Gas prices break $3.50 barrier locally
Gasoline prices have dropped below $3.50 per gallon for the first time since 2011.
After hitting $3.479 on Friday, prices fell another two cents per gallon Saturday at Wilco/Hess at Main and Granville in downtown and at Murphy Gas on US 258 South. By Sunday, that price had spread to at least four other outlets in town. -

Unsolved murders eat at law enforcement, too
It's been 25 years since Roy John Rieck was found, brutally murdered, at Tarboro's Pizza Hut. Rieck, 47, was apparently closing the establishment for the night when he was stabbed at least 20 times. He was found lying in a puddle of blood at 12:15 a.m. on Aug. 31, 1987.
