Who looks after our parks?

TARBORO — To the Editor:

There are so many wonderful aspects of living in a small town like Tarboro; we have opportunities to participate in improvement programs in gardening, home restoration courses, weight loss, summer recreation, wholesome weekend events, some of which are free, and many more that meet the interests of our residents, such as the upcoming free concert on our Town Common by the North Carolina Symphony. There’s a “Trap, Neuter, Return” organization to keep the feline population in-check. Check out the calendar page of the Daily Southerner and you will be informed of opportunities for all ages.

When a young man aspiring to complete requirements for the coveted Eagle Scout award approached us for support for his project, we reached out to do that, as it would improve the public park areas that are available to all of our townspeople. We endowed a bench in honor of our daughter, Beth.

Recently, I found out that the project we supported, building park benches for the Indian Lake trails just this spring, has been desecrated by vandals. Someone had smashed several benches at Indian Lake. Now, who is responsible for supervising that area? Is there no town employee to check on that park and see that it is safe for hikers, joggers and bikers?

Obviously the onsite supervisor is Thomas Perkins, whose position comes under the aegis of Cherry Gay. If our taxes pay for that public park, we are entitled to protection against vandals. Let’s hear an answer to this query, as last Monday’s Letter to the Editor also addressed.

Your coverage on the gun control debate was fair and accurate and I have fought against gun control my whole life. The sad thing is this time the American public is haunted by the ghosts of 20 innocent children and the claims by the proponents for assault weapons is making all gun owners look callous and uncaring.
