As the month of May has drawn to a close, many local seniors reflect on the activities that focused on us during the month.
May kicked off with the two weeks of the Down East Senior Games. Three hundred thirty seniors 55 years old and better from Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, Northampton, and Wilson counties competed in a number of sports and arts events. Thirty-four Tarboro and Pinetops residents qualified to compete this fall in the North Carolina Senior Games State Finals by placing first, second or third in events including bowling, billiards, track and field events, performing, visual, literary and heritage arts, corn hole toss, bocce, and many others. These are some of the seniors who live up to the DESG slogan — “We Still Got Game!”.
On May 18, E. L. Roberson Center was the site of the annual May Day Celebration in observance of Older Americans Month. The event was sponsored by the Roberson Center, Edgecombe County Memorial Library, and the Department of Social Services with 97 seniors in attendance. The 2012 theme is “Never Too Old to Play” and the Roberson Center grounds were filled with seniors enjoying games of croquet, shuffleboard, corn hole toss, and horseshoes. Vendors shared information about their services as music was provided by radio station WLHC-FM. An exhibit showcased the art and crafts of local seniors. Lunch was provided by Vidant Edgecombe Hospital.
Congratulations to the seniors who were participants in these events. You have shown that seniors are not too old to play and that we still got game! We hope you and many others will join the fun next May.

Thank you for your article in the Wednesday paper announcing the "Pops On The Common" on June 6. We now have Vidant Edgecombe Hospital as a major sponsor as well as KanBan Logistics. Vidant will have free health screenings available and Thorne Drugs will have free ice water. Bring your lawn chair and picnic and enjoy this under-the-stars concert.

Relay co-chairs thank residents of Edgecombe County

As co-chairs of this year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life committee, we would like to thank residents of Edgecombe County for their generosity and support. Thirty-eight teams participated in this year’s event and raised more than $132,000 to help the Society’s fight for every birthday, threatened by every cancer, here and throughout the world. -

The sad thing is this time the American public is haunted by the ghosts of 20 innocent children and the claims by the proponents for assault weapons is making all gun owners look callous and uncaring.

What has Clark Jenkins done? He has served his town, his county, and his state for five consecutive terms in the North Carolina Senate. He has led a life of service to his business, his church, and his family. He has been a friend and a partner with me and my family for over 50 years. -
