1956: Elvis Presley’s hip-shaking performance on “The Milton Berle Show” resulted in a storm of protest.
1969: Blind Faith made its debut at a free concert in London’s Hyde Park.
1974: Sly Stone married Kathy Silva during a Sly & the Family Stone concert in New York City.
1977: Alice Cooper’s pet boa constrictor, a co-star of his live act, died after being bitten by a rat it was being fed for breakfast.
1989: Reba McEntire married her manager, Narvel Blackstock.
1990: A federal judge in Florida ruled that 2 Live Crew’s “As Nasty as They Wanna Be” was obscene. The judge cited the album’s graphic sexual lyrics.
1993: Ground was broken for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. Pete Townshend and Chuck Berry were among those who attended the ceremony.
1993: Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol. He later returned to the name of Prince.
2000: Eminem was charged with allegedly brandishing a gun in a confrontation with a member of rival group Insane Clown Posse.
