Local students earn UNC degrees

CHAPEL HILL — More than 5,000 students, including seven from Edgecombe County, earned bachelor's, master's, doctoral or professional degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during the May Commencement ceremony.

Joleesa D. Daniels of Rocky Mount received a bachelor's of arts degree in public policy; David Taylor Gammons of Tarboro received a bachelor's of science degree in biology; Tracy Leigh Kirkland of Tarboro received a bachelor's of arts degree in education in child development and family studies; Vicky Mooring of Tarboro received a doctor of medicine degree; and Meredith Claire Rountree received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and mass communications.

In addition, 6,797 Carolina students were recognized for outstanding academic achievement through their selection for the Dean's List for spring 2010. Students are eligible for the list if they earn at least a 3.5 grade-point-average on a 4.0 scale while taking at least 12 letter-grade credit hours but fewer than 15 or if they make a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale while taking more than 15 letter-grade credit hours. Students must have no grades lower than a "C." On a 4.0 scale, "A" equals 4, "B" equals 3 and "C" equals 2.

Seven students from Edgecombe County made the Dean's List, including: Keosha De'von Arnold of Tarboro in management and society; Joleesa D. Daniels of Rocky Mount in public policy; David Taylor Gammons of Tarboro in biology; Qu'Nesha Shonte Hinton of Tarboro in psychology; Emily Shelton Urquhart of Speed in journalism and mass communications; Taya L. Walston of Tarboro in psychology; and Tabitha Faye Woodlief of Macclesfield in biology.
