Students will receive copy of new book along with school supplies

TARBORO — Area author and Tarboro native Jean Bryant Millard will read her new 40-page picture book, "Charlie the Dimpled Dragon" to kids attending the Back to School Bash on Aug. 21 at W.A. Pattillo A+ School.

All students attending will receive a copy of “Charlie the Dimpled Dragon” along with their school supplies. UNC-TV has generously donated 300 copies of Granny’s book to be distributed during the event.

They’ll also be given the opportunity to take “Gray-Haired Granny’s ‘No Bullying Allowed’ Promise.”  Once the children take ‘the promise,’ they’ll be given a certificate to take home.

“I’m really looking forward to my visit, Millard said. "I always have a blast when I read to young ones. And it’s a wonderful opportunity to support the adults here as they work hard to instill good, solid core values in their children."

In 2008, Millard founded StoryTime Club to publish children’s books crafted to “reinforce positive values for a ‘happier ever after’.”

“As for the name, Gray-Haired Granny, well, it was a natural for me. You see, I grayed mighty early.  When the grandchildren started coming, I began calling myself that. Through the years, the name’s just kind of stuck.”

"Charlie the Dimple Dragon" was written to both entertain children and help them understand the beauty of diversity and acceptance. The story and illustrations show the importance of accepting others’ differences and being kind. It’s an educational tool that promotes dialogue between adults and children about bullying and is age appropriate for children in pre-K to the beginning of grade 4.

Millard lives in Willow Spring along with her husband, Bob.
