Tarboro student earns Barton Scholarship

WILSON — Courtney Elizabeth Johnson of Rocky Mount, a graduate of Tarboro High School, is the recipient of the Barton W. Stone Scholarship at Barton College.

The renewable scholarship will cover $5,000 of her tuition during her freshman year.

Johnson is the daughter of Donna and Billy Murrell Smith Jr., of Rocky Mount and James E. Johnson Jr., of Tarboro.

Johnson will enter Barton College in the fall 2009 semester and plans to major in nursing.

The Barton W. Stone Scholarship is awarded to entering freshmen who have thoroughly prepared for the challenges of a liberal arts education.

Criteria for this award includes a minimum 2.7 GPA, a minimum SAT score of 950 or a minimum ACT score of 20.

Recipients must also rank within the top 55 percent of their high school classes.

A 2.7 grade point average must be maintained to retain the scholarship for four years.

In addition to the required renewal GPA, students must maintain satisfactory academic progress, as outlined in the college catalog, and be enrolled continuously on a full-time basis.
