TARBORO —
Edgecombe County Board of Education Chair Evelyn Wilson was honored at the North Carolina School Board Association conference in Greensboro from Nov. 15-17 by being asked to join the All-State School Board.
Wilson was also awarded for accumulating more than 901 hours of Board training for the 2009-2010 academic year, along with fellow Board member Keith Pittman.
The two were recognized as members of the Scholars’ Circle, the highest possible recognition in the Academy of School Boardsmanship.
Wilson is an active member of NCSBA and NSBA and participates in numerous workshops, meetings, and conferences each year.
She was elected to the Edgecombe County Board of Education in 1990 and currently serves as both the chairperson and an appeals committee member.
Early in her tenure, Wilson was involved in the complicated and controversial process of merging two school systems.
Wilson has presided over many successes during her time on the board.
In 1999, she contributed to Edgecombe County’s resurgence during a major crisis and headed recovery efforts after the loss of two schools in the flooding caused by Hurricane Floyd.
In 2004, she helped pass the first school bond referendum since 1972, garnering $12.8 million for capital improvements.
In 2008, she helped foster significant technology advancement by encouraging board support of the 1:1 Laptop Initiative that now provides portable computers for all high school students and teachers.
Wilson, Pittman and board member Dr. Evelyn Johnson were all present for the conference along with Superintendent Dr. Wayne Talley.
The group attended seminars and various sessions to further educate them on educational issues and possible improvements for Edgecombe County Public Schools.
