Vidant Edgecombe Hospital recently honored three employees for their achievement in the Clinical Ladder Program. Kelly Harrell, a recreational therapist, Colleen Sparks, a lead chemistry technician III, and Matthew Eiban, a speech language pathologist, all received a stone lapel pin designating their new promotion status, a monetary gift, and a luncheon reception in their honor.
The Clinical Ladder Program at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital was started in 1988 and was designed to recognize the bedside care-giver or clinician that spends at least 50 persent of their work day in direct patient care activities. The program recognizes those who exhibit qualities of excellence in care to the patient, as well as working to improve overall quality and performance in their department, hospital, and/or to the community.
Harrell received her promotion to Clinical Ladder Level II. She joined the rehabilitation team at the hospital in October 2007. “Kelly has become a patient favorite for her caring and personal style and clinical expertise,” said Linda Williams-Brown, Manager for Rehabilitation Therapy at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital. “She is a leader within the department and is always looking for ways to improve patient care.”
Eiban received his promotion to Clinical Ladder III. Hired in 2008, Matthew works with patients across the life span. He can be found in the nursery feeding newborns, working with patients on the inpatient rehabilitation unit, and any other clinical area within the hospital. “Matthew loves what he does,” said Williams-Brown. “His motivation and spirit is contagious among his peers, and I am thrilled to see him excel in the Clinical Ladder program.”
Sparks was promoted with the highest Clinical Ladder level at Vidant Edgecombe, Level IV. Colleen began working at the hospital in August 2006 as a medical technologist, and later moved into the lead chemistry technician role. “Colleen is the first technologist to obtain Clinical Ladder IV from the laboratory,” said Julie Allard, Laboratory Manager. “This is a significant achievement for which she should be proud.”
Education Manager Cathy Bellamy oversees the Clinical Ladder Program as a part of Vidant Edgecombe’s Recruitment and Retention Plan, recognizing the contributions of staff to patient care and improvement in a quality initiative or process. “The Clinical Ladder program is important for our bedside staff to help them further their career through advancement,” said Bellamy. “It also gives them a feeling of accomplishment and achievement, and rewards them for their excellent care to our patients.”
