TARBORO —
Tamara Frank-Pourvady, a professional tutor in the Curriculum Learning Center at Edgecombe Community College, has won an International Distinguished Advisor Award from the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention.
Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society for students attending two-year schools.
The convention was held April 12-15 in Nashville, Tennessee. John Sharpe, Carolinas Region Regional Coordinator, accepted the award on her behalf.
Frank-Pourvady has served as an advisor to the college’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter since 2002. “I am greatly touched by this honor,” she says.
“I have stayed involved in this organization as long as I have because of the opportunity it gives me to work with some phenomenal people. Many of them end up surprised by how much more they can actually do than they thought they could, and I have enjoyed facilitating those positive experiences.”
Out of 83 chapters in the Carolinas Region, only three people won International Distinguished Advisor Awards. Worldwide, only 30 people received this honor this year.
Frank-Pourvady holds a master’s degree from North Carolina State University and a bachelor’s degree from Guilford College.
To be a member of Phi Theta Kappa, students must have completed 12 credit hours in an associate degree program and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Phi Theta Kappa comprises more than 1,200 chapters at two-year colleges across the United States and in several other countries. It is the largest honor society in American higher education.
ECC is a member of the Carolinas Region, which includes North Carolina and South Carolina.
The college has won several previous international awards. Most recently, student Phyllis Williams won an International Distinguished Member Award in 2007. Graduate and former student Teresa Webb won the same award in 2006.
