TARBORO — During the Robert Williams Benefit Golf Tournament at Hilma Country Club earlier this month, a little boy named Chase walked up and asked what was going on.

When he discovered what was happening, he asked if if he could please donate his $5.

Williams died of cancer on July 28. He was 50.

The tournament at Hilma Country Club earlier this month was a huge success on so many levels, said Tammy Joyner, one of the organizers.

"We raised $3,685, way more than we ever anticipated," she said.

"It was not about the money, though. It was about honoring a special man, an awesome circle of friends and bringing out the good in people," Joyner said. "It was a celebration of Robert's life."

We would like to give a special thanks to Hilma for allowing us to hold the event there, a special place for Robert and friends," Joyner said, "and a grand thank you to all the people involved that made this event such a success: the donations, sponsorships of holes, the participants in the tournament, the list could go on and on.

"Most of all the love that was felt throughout the day as we celebrated Robert's life."

The group now plans to make the tournament an annual event every July to remember Robert and celebrate friendship.

Williams' widow Sheila feels compelled to "Pay It Forward" with procedes of future tournaments to benefit a family fighting the cancer fight and a part donated to Hilma Country Club in Robert's honor.

Filling for election begins Monday
Filing in the May 8 Primary Election gets underway at noon Monday and the Edgecombe County Board of Elections (BOE) is gearing up for some interesting races. Filing for the election continues through Feb. 29 and may be done on the fourth floor of the County Administration Building in Tarboro.

Bridge work
A new bridge over the Tar River in Edgecomb County will be constructed on Springfield Road north of Rocky Mount. The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded the $1.6 million contract was awarded to United Contractors LLC of Great Falls, S.C. Work can begin as early as June 1 and must be completed by Dec. 31.

Today in History Viet Nam Peace Accord
On January 27, 1973, the Viet Nam War ended. On that day, President Richard Nixon negotiated a peace settlement, ending America’s longest war. The ceasefire began at midnight on that day, with troop withdrawal beginning several months later, in March, 1973. The Viet Nam peace settlement called for the release of prisoners of war within 60 days, and for American forces to be withdrawn during that period.
