TARBORO —
Starting Monday, Larry Newkirk Jr. of Princeville, owner of the LNJ Barbershop at 319 Geddie Ave. in Princeville, will be giving away free haircuts to the homeless and needy in the area every Monday from 8 a.m. to noon throughout the holiday season.
“That’s what this time of the year is all about, said Newkirk, 37. “Sometimes people mess up Christmas and forget is about helping others.
“It’s about the birth of our Lord.”
Newkirk said he was inspired when he saw a segment recently on CNN about a barber who gave away free haircuts to the homeless.
“I got to thinkng, I can do that right here in our area,” said Newkirk. “These days, a lot of folks are in need and I can help some of them.
“This is my God-given talent, no one can stop me from giving it away.”
Newkirk, whose shop is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, said that in addition to the hours on Mondays, he will be avaliable to go out to nursing homes or hospitals at other times to give haircuts to those in need who are unable to make it to his business on Mondays.
“I just want to give back and help some people,” said Newkirk. “Lord only knows that people have looked out for me over the years.”
Newkirk said that many in the community have helped him after Newkirk lost his home to a fire in February of 2009, which displaced his family and left him unable to operate his business for several months.
“A lot of people stepped up to help us after that,” said Newkirk. “You never realize how much people care about you until something happens.”
Newkirk said he is grateful for the oppertunity to return the kindness to others.
“A haircut can make you feel better about yourself,” said Newkirk. “I just want to help someone feel that way.”
