Blackbeard’s represents Edgecombe

TARBORO — Blackbeard's BBQ & C Food at 5232 U.S. 64 Alternate E., is representing Edgecombe County eateries in July's issue of "Our State Magazine."

An article in the July issue featuring “100 Foods You Should Eat in 100 North Carolina Counties,” listed 100 different restaurants, diners, stores, farmer's markets and festivals that each offer a unique dish or dishes. Blackbeard's, and its wood-smoked barbecue, blue crabs, various side-dishes and homemade ice cream, was author David Bailey's pick for Edgecombe.

"It was somewhat of an honor," said owner Charissa Summerlin, who runs the restaurant with her husband, Lewis. "It was a nice little suprise.

"It really made me feel good to know that after eight years here, I'm doing something right."

Summerlin said that this was not the first time the magazine has noticed her cuisine.

"A website that is affiliated with 'Our State' ran an article featuring our herring," said Summerlin. "I didn't even realize it until someone printed it off and brought it to me and there was a picture of my herring dish.

"I was really surprised."

Summerlin said that she is also surprised, and pleased, at the response she's gotten since the article was published.

"I am amazed at how many people from out of town have come in since the article came out," said Summerlin. "I've gotten people from Raleigh, the Outer Banks and  a lot of people traveling through the state.

"Some people are going through the state trying to hit all 100 spots before the summer is out."

Summerlin said that she has learned how to give directions to the restaurant, which has a Tarboro address, but is closer to Conetoe.

"I've learned every exit number and road in the area," said Summerlin. "People always start in Tarboro when they are looking for us and then they call and I guide them to us."

Blackbeard's BBQ & C Food is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Summerlin can be reached at 641-0103.
